What’s it like to be a Chainsmoker right now? Things seem to be on a steady climb.
“It’s great, we’re just really excited about everything that’s happening right now. We’ve got a lot of cool things that we’ve been working on and that we have coming up. It feels the same, we’ve just been working hard and life is good!”
What’s your day-to-day like though? I think our readers might be curious what life on a daily basis is like for you guys?
“Getting on a plane and flying to Edmonton and going out with friends and then drinking lots of Fireball. We like Vancouver though, we’ve played here 3 or 4 times already and Drew took a vacation here before for a few days.”
As a duo, how do you divide up things? How does that work compared to Tiesto for example, who you’ve just worked with?
“We’re together pretty much every fucking day. Honestly I don’t know, at this point we’ve been doing it so long, it’s just a natural work flow. I know that there’s certainly a lot of pluses that I can think of that we benefit from. A lot of the solo artists that are up and coming that we have known for a couple of years are going insane, when you go and talk to them you realize that they’re not friends with their manager, or not have one at all, they don’t have a lot of DJ friends, and they have these crazy creative crisis’s cause they haven’t found their identities as artists and they’re just trying to make the new thing instead of something that’s inherently themselves. Things that they think other people will like they have no one to talk to and they’re going crazy and so having someone else to bounce ideas off really helps.”
This is not the first time you guys have been to Vancouver, what are your thoughts on the city?
“It’s our favorite city in Canada, for sure, there’s really no competition, not really a better city at all or even close to. Toronto’s kinda dirty, and there’s nothing really to do there, the cities not very nice and lots of homeless people but they’ve got hot girls there though.”
So we came up with a Top 5 list of the best Chainsmokers songs so far. We would be interested to know how our list compares to yours? We’ve got:
“Roses” – The Chainsmokers ft. Rozes
“Overload” (Chainsmoker Remix) – Life of Dillon
“Kanye” – The Chainsmokers
“Let You Go” – The Chainsmokers
“Sway” (Chainsmokers Remix) – Anna of the North
1) “Roses” is number one. You can’t not like that song.
2) “Julian” A fan favourite we used to play it all the time but the mix on it is not very good but it’s good if you’re like playing it in your car.
4.) “Around Us” Yo I still get the feel for “Around Us” we did it a long time ago but everytime it comes on I get mad emotions.
5) Our two new songs that aren’t out yet, “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Setting Fires” those are the two best songs, with “Roses”, the best songs that we’ve ever done.
There’s some other songs that we have that most of our fans don’t even know about, we’ve just done so many remixes, and how many number ones do we have on Hype Machine? 30? 32?”
You’re jumping to "Roses" in that Instagram post you guys did from performing at Lollapalooza has got to be one of your biggest Instagram moments, it was pretty epic.
“It was sick, that festival was so tight, that was the best show we’ve ever done. Not all festivals are like that, that festival was really big because it’s one of the biggest festivals in the world, and most prestigious in the US, the second most next to Coachella and you just go and to play in front of that many people, that was probably our biggest crowd. That one we really felt engaged with the audience and the connection we felt with everyone was next level.”
Your podcast on Nice Hair has been around for over a year now. I expect that Tyga is not a fan (a reference to their latest podcast, Nice Hair 13, where they discuss Tyga as a rapper and his recent purchase for Kylie Jenner) but it seems to be growing for you guys. Tell us about what that’s like and how you see that evolving you’ve expanded to Europe? Perhaps you’ll have your very own rap beef?
“Probably not, we didn’t say anything bad about him, we just said he spends his money like he’s an idiot.”
You could be in the middle of a rap beef.
“That would be awesome. That’s when you’d know that it wasn’t a very smart decision. Very irresponsible rapper.”
Maybe Kylie Jenner will come at you with a response?
“Yeah right dude, there’s no way that Kylie’s going to have Tyga’s back. If he wants to bring it, awesome!”
*Note, I didn’t distinguish between Drew and Alex answering the questions for sake of flow and clarity as they actually answered them together, alternating back and forth.
At this point we toasted to their continued success and Drew said he would play “Julian” (from their Top 5) as well as the two new songs in their set later and we left them to get ready for the show. It should also be noted how unbelievably friendly and chill the guys were. They did not rush us for time, there was no awkwardness at all and they were that way from the moment we met up with them early in the night until we said our goodbyes after 3am, well after they had finished their set. We talked to them additionally about how much of a privilege it was to hear their two new songs that we anticipate to be absolutely massive for them in the coming months and that got great reactions from the crowd in Vancouver. The guys were very supportive of local group Young Bombs who were opening for them and remained humble whilst being engaging all night long. If possible, we’ve come away even bigger fans than we were before. Hats off gentlemen!
