Switching gears from covering the sounds of the Chainsmokers and Young Bombs at the Commodore Ballroom, Never Radio hit the Media Club this weekend to indulge in the dirty blues of Little Hurricane (Saturday) and the stunning twin vocals of Say Lou Lou (Sunday).
Little Hurricane, a San Diego based blues duo consisting of guitarist Anthony Catalano and drummer Celest Spina took to the stage Saturday night. The duo’s bluesy rock feel and a subtle southern twang got the packed Media Club on their feet loving the show almost instantly.
Celeste with a seductive smile on her face absolutely beat the piss out of her drum kit while Anthony blasted guitar riffs and vocals. Having never heard Little Hurricane live before we weren’t exactly sure what to expect but this duo brought a dynamic that only added to what we have to say was an incredible live show. After listening to their adaptation of Vera Hall’s “Natural Blues” (made famous by Moby) Never Radio will definitely be there next time Little Hurricane blows through town.
Appearing to step out of the 70’s and on to the stage of the Media Club was the Australian/Swedish twin duo Say Lou Lou. Playing for an eclectic crowd that was by far one of the most diverse that Never Radio has ever experienced, Miranda and Elektra Kilbey-Jansson held the crowd with their nostalgic look, incredible vocals and an engaging stage presence.
Clearly inspired by the style of past generations (and pulled off beautifully) Say Lou Lou’s track list was scattered with songs from their newly released album Lucid Dreaming and with some of their earlier much loved singles. Being their first visit to Vancouver and having just released their first Album this is a female twin duo that’s worth keeping an ear out for. We recommend you toss Lucid Dreaming on one of your chill play lists then sit back relax and cozy up with the ladies of Say Lou Lou.
