We had the privilege of heading down to one of Seattle's funkiest neighbourhoods for the 2016 Capitol Hill Block Party. Basically, they shut down 6 city blocks of the city, set up 2 outdoor stages, included 9 bars, 14 restaurants, and a whole bunch of people looking to have some day drinks and dance. What an absolutely fantastic event.
We arrived Saturday afternoon and headed into the grounds to prepare for the main event - Odesza. Have to say, this was the coolest media room we've ever visited. The complimentary cocktails was an easy sell, but on top of this there were live performances, interviews, a VR 3D painting set-up, and a patio overlooking the whole event from the 4th floor. It was actually a little bit difficult to leave the media room and head back down to the stages...
Ok, who are we kidding, you couldn't not be down in the action when Odesza performed. The crowd was incredible - once you got used to the fact that you were literally in a sea of people (there was no standing still) the energy was contagious. And the energy was so GOOD - having attended several festivals this summer with d-bags looking to fight, and space cadets having dabbled a little too heavily into the party favours - this was some good old fashioned day drinking and dancing. And so many good food trucks!
As expected - Odesza absolutely killed the hometown crowd, and was the highlight for us.
There was such an eclectic mix of performers at this festival, from Sango, to Phoebe Ryan, to The Cave Singers, to Odesza. Definitely something for everyone. And even if you weren't there for the music (which is impossible) there were so many other events going on in and around the festival grounds - markets, free yoga classes, a film festival, free concerts showcasing local talent - you couldn't go wrong.
Such an easy trip down from Vancouver, such a cool venue - CHBP is a must on your summer festival checklist. A huge thanks to CHBP for having us, we can only hope it's in the starts to attend next year's event.
P.S. a small number of tickets for the 2017 festival are already available HERE!
